4 things to do in the Bay Area for kids who loves planes

Seaplane Adventures

Have a child who loves planes, helicopters and all things that fly? Channel that passion by exposing them to these aviation-themed outings. And did you know that the US is currently facing a shortage of pilots? These experiences may even shape their future career interests or hobbies!

1. Watch planes land at Coyote Point

Love to watch planes land? Get a great view from Coyote Point Recreation Area in San Mateo. With dual runways at SFO just up the road, there is no shortage of aircraft landing. While you’re there, check out the Magic Mountain Playground and CuriOdyssey (temporarily closed due to storm damage).

Tip: Our favorite time of day to go is midday when the Trans-Atlantic flights come in and kids can easily spot the larger aircraft.

2. Take a seaplane or helicopter ride over the San Francisco Bay

For a truly unique experience, treat your child to a helicopter or seaplane ride at the North Bay’s Seaplane Adventures. Offering aerial tours to see the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and the Marin Headlands from a new perspective, this will definitely be something that is talked about for years to come. With a few options for tours in the 20-30 minute range, it is the ideal length for a younger child.

Tip: If the seaplane experience is out of your budget, consider asking friends & family to chip in for this experience as your child’s next birthday gift versus getting dozens of toys to clutter up your house.

3. Visit a local aviation museum

The Bay Area is home to numerous aviation museums with the chance to learn and explore about the industry. From San Carlos’ Hiller Aviation Museum to Oakland’s Aviation Museum, you have two great options for kids. Additionally, many smaller airports like San Martin Airport’s Wings of History Air Museum in the South Bay have museums with limited hours.

4. Step foot on an aircraft carrier in Alameda

If your child also has a love of boats, visiting the USS Hornet Aircraft Carrier in Alameda is a real treat! Climb aboard this massive ship and also check out several planes on display.
